Unlocked cell phones are cell phones that have been unlocked, allowing you to use them on any network or as prepaid cell phones. You are going to need your cell phone unlocked because you originally have a phone that you used on another network. The network, which you likely purchased your phone from, prevents you from leaving their company and using the phone on another network.

In other words, the original network took steps to ensure that your cell phone is exclusive just to their network and cannot be used anywhere else. What this means for many people is that if they choose to leave a company, they are stuck with a locked cell phone, even if they paid for it. The good news is that now you can get unlocked cell phones or even used specific software programs that will unlock them for you.

You can then use these unlocked cell phones on another network or use them as prepaid cell phones.

Are Prepaid Cell Phones For You?

Well, sure they very well could be. If you are looking for cell phone service that does not tie you down and leave you committed to a contract, then yes, prepaid cell phones may be for you. If you are looking for a better way to control your cell phone costs, without having to worry about excess charges, hidden fees, monthly fees, or service charges, then yes, prepaid cell phones may be for you.

If you are looking for a phone that does not require a credit check or a security deposit if you have poor or bad credit, then yes, prepaid cell phones may be for you. As you can see, prepaid cell phones provide you with a great deal of freedom that traditional cell phones do not offer. You can control your costs, you do not have to worry about monthly charges, and you are not stuck with a contract that you cannot get out of without having to worry about hefty penalties and fees.

Are Prepaid Cell Phones More Expensive?

Yes, in some cases they can be more expensive than traditional cell phones. The minutes are generally at a cost that is two times the amount of traditional cell phone minutes. Furthermore, you do not get quite as many minutes, or actually near the minutes for the same cost as you would with traditional cell phones.

The choice is yours with prepaid cell phones. Also remember, just because you buy a cell phone from a certain network provider, it does not mean that you have to just chalk it up to a bad investment. Now, you can unlock cell phones and use them on any network you choose, all you need is a software program and a data cable to get the job done.

When it comes to choosing a cell phone, consumers in the U.S must select the carrier as well. Once the contract is signed the purchaser gets a locked GSM (a GSM phone requires a SIM card) phone that is not even referred as "locked" by the carrier, so most of people don't even realize that they can't use their cell phones with another providers in case if they are not satisfied with the services.

The underlying agenda for the strategy used by wireless carriers in North America is to gain a total control over their relationship with consumers and to enforce their choice of cell phone manufacturers they work with. On a bright side the carriers subsidize the cell phones selling them at a fraction of the cost or giving them away for free when a 2 year contract is signed.

It makes cell phones more affordable to more people. This explains why in US between 90 to 95 percent of all cell phones are sold through the cell phone providers when in Asia and Europe only from 25 to 30 percent of the cell phones are sold through wireless carriers.

Recently unlocked cell phones became more popular than ever mostly due to consumers been frustrated and dissatisfied with the services provided by their phone carriers. Enormous roaming charges, inability to switch their phones between providers drive consumers away from bounding with the certain wireless company. People choose freedom over the price savings that actually come with the cost of limitation and commitment to the services that may not be that appealing at the end.

Unlocked cell phones are in such elevated demand that third party companies will unlock a cell phone at price. Consumers have to be careful about this since the phone can get permanently damaged or do not function correctly with other carriers. Unlocking a cell phone can be dangerously unreliable. It is wise to buy an unlocked GSM phone. With a GSM phone, consumer's phonebook is in the SIM card and so even if the phone gets damaged the data can still be retrieved. If the cell phone is unlocked, it will recognize a SIM card from any carrier, and this is a main benefit of having your cell phone unlocked.

Your network provider prefers that you avail of their services as long as you need one. In an effort to increase customer retention, providers have started offering "free" phones for anyone who will sign a contract with them. Unfortunately, phones acquired this way aren't really free because the plans of these networks are costly.

Having a mobile phone that you have expected is now easy, just by entering a deal with the network provider or so you can get the latest one.Having an unlock cell phone means that you have the freedom to choose the network provider which you are most comfortable with. With an unlock mobile phone, you can now use your old Blackberry or Motorola with a more efficient service provider.

Thanks to mobile phone unlock service; it is no longer necessary to buy a new phone in order to switch to another provider. With the advancement of technology, remote unlock cell phone is now possible at a much lower price. We are fortunate that technology has new kind of technology that can answer new needs such as mobile phone unlock. If you are in the difficulty of having to learn the use of another phone along with the high cost of high tech units, then you will begin to realize the value of an unlock phone.

Most people buy another phone when they switch networks. For those who do not have that much money, this can be very inconvenient. When a network provider fails to meet our standards then we should find a different network provider, right? However, we are faced with the problem of locked mobile phones.

You can choose to be absorbed with your network's business strategies and tolerate their inefficiencies even if you are unsatisfied. You can also choose to spend on new phones each time you get fed up with a network provider. But if you are looking for a cheap and effective solution, you can ask for help from people who know how to unlock a phone by paying a small amount for their services.

You can choose to give "nothing personal, just business" strategies of your network provider. You can choose to buy a new phone each time you become unsatisfied with a network provider services. You can also choose to find other way to solve your problem and seek the services of people who know how to unlock a phone and pay a considerably cheaper amount than what you would spend in buying a new phone. Remember, money does not grow on trees so spend it wisely. Also, a new phone might be too technical, too complex and too annoying to learn so you better stick to the one that you are now very familiar and happy with.

Buying an unlocked cell phone has numerous benefits. Beyond the most obvious (cost savings), one of the best benefits to purchasing a used phone instead of a new one is the fact that you will have more control over the network that you use. When you buy a new phone, you are restricted to either using the network that offers the phone you want or using one of the phones supported on your network. With an unlocked used phone, you get the best of both worlds - the phone you want on the network you want.

Of course, in searching for a used phone, you'll still need to find one that will work on whatever network you want to use. However, used phones are often unlocked, meaning they can work on any of a few networks, which gives you more options. You also are not limited by the limited selection available at your provider's local store as you can purchase any phone made for their network, even if it is no longer commercially available, and still get it activated. Cell phone choice is largely influenced by personal preferences and choosing from a wider selection of used phones will help ensure you get the phone with all the features you want.

If you decide to purchase a used cell phone, take some time to figure out what network you want to use. Consider how you plan to use the phone and look for the best combination of coverage and price. For example, if you plan to do a lot of internet browsing with your new phone, look for the carrier with the current lowest prices on their data plans, assuming they have adequate coverage in your area.

Once you know what network you want to operate on, you need to find out what "kind" of network it is. There are a few different kinds that I'm sure you've heard of even if you don't know what they mean - GSM, CDMA, and TDMA are the most common. The different types of networks have their relative advantages. All will perform well in major cities. However, if you live in or plan to use your phone a lot in rural areas, you amy be better off with a CDMA or TDMA network like Verizon or Sprint-Nextel. On the other hand, people that do a lot of international travel are better with a GSM network as these phones come with SIM cards that can easily be swapped out to allow the phone to work on international networks and avoid roaming charges.

Once you know what kind of network you need, find a phone that works on that type of network and begin comparing the prices of the different providers that operate on that network technology. At this point, it's as simple as going in to the local office or calling customer service to sign up and get your used phone activated.

Cell phones that are purchased from wireless providers are automatically "locked" to that network. What that means is that if you decide to switch to a different network/carrier, you will be unable to take your phone with you to the new network, despite the high costs you might have paid for it originally. The better option is to purchase an unlocked cell phone in the first place, which will help you avoid this potential problem and also comes with some other benefits.

There are several benefits to buying an unlocked cell phone from an alternate source; that is, a phone that was not purchased directly from your carrier.

First, unlocked phones give you freedom from contracts. Cellular providers often offer phones at a discount in exchange for a customer signing a contract with the provider. Therefore, if you decide to switch carriers before your contract expires, they will charge you a large cancellation fee, usually around $250-$500. When you have an unlocked phone you can avoid having to purchase a phone locked to a particular network and will not have to sign a contract to get service from a specific provider.

Also, you can usually find more phones available when looking at unlocked phones. Cell phone providers' stores usually carry 20-30 phones that they make available to their customers. The unlocked market is literally full of hundreds of phones, meaning you can essentially get any phone you want with any feature you want. The only thing to be aware of here is that your carrier of choice has a network capable of using all the features available on a particular phone.

Further, not only will your unlocked phone be one you can take with you to another domestic carrier, but should you travel overseas you will be able to take your unlocked cell phone with you; simply pop your new prepaid SIM card into your phone. Doing this will save you a small fortune in international roaming charges, and save you from having to purchase a new phone while in your temporary location.

Finally, there is a much bigger market for reselling an unlocked phone than there is for phones that are locked to a network. When you decide to upgrade to a new phone, you will have much more luck selling your unlocked phone to another user than you will selling a phone that is locked to a particular network, meaning you can recoup some of your initial costs for the phone after you've used it.

Unlocked cell phones provide their users a lot of freedom and peace of mind as they are not locked in to contracts. However, you must be aware of where you purchase your phone from as some vendors are better than others. Try to stick to reputable dealers when purchasing an unlocked phone. A good way to measure the credibility of a seller is whether or not they offer a warranty on their unlocked phones. If they do, you should have much more confidence buying from them.

The latest craze in the mobile phone industry is “unlocking”, as more and more cell phone users do not want to part with their current cell phone, but are looking for another cell phone service provider for one reason or another. Reasons for keeping their phones can range from price to feel to style, while reasons for not keeping their current cell phone service can differ greatly.

Mobile phones come with a variety of charges and fees, not to mention the fact that you usually need to pay for the actual cell phone itself. It’s not an easy task to get a new service provider to use your current phone. Basically, you’ll have to buy a brand new phone for your new provider.

Every cell phone bought in the world has a “serial number”, referred to as an IMEI, or International Mobile Equipment Identity, which directly connects a particular phone to a service provider and also connects the same phone to the user. Inside many cell phones is a removable card called a SIM (Subscriber Information Module), which serves as the medium between the phone and user as well as the phone and the service provider. Some such providers put a lock on the SIM inside of YOUR phone so that they are the only service provider that you can use on that particular phone.

By unlocking YOUR phone or SIM, you are simply allowing your cell phone purchase to be more useful to you, as it enables you to use your phone with absolutely any SIM card, anywhere in the world, regardless of which company you originally purchased the phone from.

The benefits are staggering! Besides alleviating roaming charges and the freedom to choose your service provider, you can actually increase the resale value of your phone! As long as the unlocking process is done properly, no harm will be done to the phone and service should go on uninterrupted.

Of course, unlocking your mobile phone won’t get you out of a current contract with a mobile phone service provider, as you’ll still be responsible for paying the monthly maintenance fee for the remainder of your contract.

There are primarily two different ways in which a mobile phone can be unlocked. Firstly, is the archaic means of sending your phone through the mail to a legitimate company to complete the service for you.

Secondly, more recent advances are allowing mobile phones to be unlocked with the use of a “secret code”. Such a code is based on the IMEI serial number assigned to your phone and the service provider who originally locked it. This particular option is much less costly and time consuming, as it can usually be completed via email or other type of website correspondence with a legitimate mobile phone code provider, or even by downloading your own private lock kit.

By: Samantha Hasson
