Everyone's talking about unlocked cell phones, but no one is taking the time to explain exactly what it means. Here are a few basic points about the subject:

Why should you unlock mobile phones?

In general, there are two main types of cell phones, GSM and CDMA, each compatible to different frequency ranges. When GSM compatible phones come out of the factory, they can be used under any GSM carrier (AT&T, T-Mobile etc.) around the world using a SIM card.

However, mobile carriers usually choose to lock these settings, so that they don't work with other carriers and customers can't simply change carriers at will. They then offer cheap phones in return for a long term commitment to a service plan. Unlocking mobile phones sometimes enables the customer to reverse the lock settings and to use their device with other GSM carriers. Another way is to buy the phone in its original state, already unlocked.

Can you use cell phone unlock codes that you can find over the internet?

Unlock codes found over the internet could either be worthless or harmful to your device as propriety setting may still remain on the phone, so it's usually best to simply leave it to professionals.

And what about CDMA phones?

As CDMA phones don't use SIM cards, at present unlocked CDMA cell-phones is only a concept and they are pretty much programmed to work only under their assigned carrier. But as technology keeps changing, it may still be possible in the future.

By: Sam G Moore

Since unlocking mobile phones today is very common there are also a lot of methods on how to do it. It is also available in almost all regular shops, online and even from service providers. One way to have an unlocked cell phone is by acquiring an unlock code. Unlock codes can be ordered in the Internet, service providers and from regular or third-party shops. To unlock a cell phone with the use of an unlock code look for the unlock option on you cell phone. When choosing this option you will be required to enter the unlock code and in a few minutes the lock status of the cell phone will be changed to unlock.

Another way to unlock cell phones is to bring it in a regular shop that offers unlocking services for cell phones. The expert technician will use a special software application which is used to connect to the cell phone. Once it is connected the technician will configure the software to unlock the cell phone. There are settings on cell phone that is changed to make the phone unlocked. The danger of this is that some cell phones stop working properly because some settings are changed. There are functions that the user is not able to use because it will not work with other SIM cards from other carriers. But nonetheless this does not happen to mobile phones manufactured by the major telecommunications company when it is unlocked.

Unlocking cell phones online is one of the easiest ways to do it. To look for a website that offers this service you just open up any search engine then on the search box type-in the phrase “unlocked cell phone”. The results will provide you with numerous websites that offer this service. Some websites sells unlocked cell phone this way you will not have to send your phone to them and wait for it to be delivered back to you.

Another website offers the Smart SIM Unlock Overlay Card this is used to insert in between the SIM card the phone’s contacts. This card is so thin that it will not produce any bulkiness when used in a cell phone. The Smart SIM Unlock Overlay Card is programmed to tell the cell phone that the SIM it is using is the approved SIM. To enable to insert the Smart SIM Unlock Overlay Card you will need to cut out a piece of the SIM card. Do not worry because the part that is being cut out will not destroy the SIM card because it is just part of the plastic casing. This method has been proven to be effective and it was even featured in several news papers and in the television. To order the unlock Overlay Card just enter the phrase “Smart SIM Unlock Overlay Card” in the search box of a search engine. Then in an instant the websites that offer this unlock overlay card will be displayed in the results. The unlock overlay card will definitely provide you with an instant unlocked cell phone.

How many cell phones do you have in the nightstand drawer next to your bed? Do you not want to toss them out because there’s nothing wrong with them? Have you ever wondered why you can’t use one of your phones with a different service than the one you originally signed up with? I mean really, they all sell pretty much the same phones, right? That’s why you need to seriously consider unlocking your mobile phone.

I remember back before I knew any better, the battery in my cell phone wasn’t holding a charge, so I took it back to the store where I bought it. They informed me that it would be cheaper to buy another phone and sign a new contract than to buy a fully charging battery. I didn’t want another phone, as I had four already, but I also didn’t want to spend more that I had to. So I got yet another brand new phone and signed a new agreement for two more years. If I had known then what I know now, I would have simply unlocked my phone. Here’s how it works:

Every cell phone has an International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI), a serial number that connects a phone to its service. An IMEI also connects the phone’s owner to the phone. The IMEI is the “tape” that connects the phone subscriber to the service.

Now, inside most cell phones is a removable Subscriber Information Module, or SIM for short. A SIM is a card that also connects the phone to the owner (subscriber) and simultaneously the phone to the service. Many cell service companies will lock the SIM so the phone will only work with their service. This is why you need to buy a new phone when you switch wireless phone companies. This is true no matter how much you paid for the phone- and you may never be able to use it with a different service provider, no matter how many calls they drop.

When you unlock your phone, you can use any cell phone service you choose, plus you’ll get rid of the roaming charges threat and be able to get more cash if you’d like to sell your phone. Your new, unlocked phone will be legal attachment-free. Of course, if you have a contract with a provider, legally you are fully responsible to fulfill all obligations with said company, including payment and length of contract.

If you wanted to unlock your cell phone in the not so distant past, you had to send your phone out to a company and have them perform the service. But recent technological advances and e-mail have brought this service directly into your home. Many companies who provide such a mobile phone unlocking service can get you the “secret code” to unlock your phone based on your IMEI and send it to you via email. You don’t even have to wait for the postal carrier to show up- just for your computer to boot up.

By: Samantha Hasson
